Though the show begins with a plane crash on a tropical island with many mysteries, its themes often delve into the chaos, dysfunction, and sometimes horrible personal choices made as a result of daddy issues. From Jack to John Locke to Kate to Penny to Sun, few major characters are immune to this trope; Lost creator J.J. Abrams, who directed the excellent Lost pilot, brought similar themes over from Felicity and Alias and even into his feature version of Star Trek.
The first two seasons are still familiar to so many Lost fans because they are constantly featured in the recaps that air before, during, and after new seasons of the show on ABC. However, what you’ll notice while burning through the glorious transfers on these new Blu-ray seasons is how much the show has changed. The first couple of seasons were less focused on quantum plot contortions, allowing viewers to breathe and share in some wonderful character moments. Such moments are arguably less prominent these days than [SPOILER!/SPECULATION?] jumps in space and time.
As I mentioned before, the new Blu-ray discs take full advantage of the format’s 1080P resolution and do justice to the show’s brilliant Hawaii locations. The extras are largely the same as on previous DVD releases, but Lost fans will definitely want to experience the show with the best picture and sound quality available.
The first season was nominated for twelve Primetime Emmy Awards. They won six: "Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series", "Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series", "Outstanding Drama Series" (J.J. Abrams), "Outstanding Music Composition for a Series (Dramatic Underscore)" (Michael Giacchino), "Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Drama Series" and "Outstanding Special Visual Effects for a Series". Terry O'Quinn and Naveen Andrews received nominations in the "Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series" category.
